What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code is a QR pattern that doesn't encode the final URL directly. Instead, it encodes a short redirect URL managed by QRflows. When someone scans, QRflows looks up the current destination and sends them there.

That redirect layer is what makes the QR editable. The printed pattern stays the same, but the destination is editable forever. You can swap the link, replace a PDF, point to a hosted landing page, or apply Smart Rules — without changing a single pixel on the box, poster or business card.

Scans are logged so you can answer: how many people scanned, on what kind of device, and when?

If you are comparing QR platforms, our QR Code Chimp alternative page explains where scan limits, Smart Rules, and campaign routing start to matter for growing teams.

    Static vs dynamic QR codes

Static codes are good for one-shot, never-changing links. Dynamic codes are built for real business use.

    Static QR

    • Destination is baked into the pattern
    • Cannot be changed once printed
    • No scan tracking — you don't know if it's used
    • Long URLs make the QR dense and harder to scan
    • Reprint required for every change
    • OK for very simple, never-changing links
    Recommended

    Dynamic QR

    • Destination is editable any time
    • Same printed QR forever — no reprint
    • Scan tracking: count, device, and country where available
    • Short, dense-friendly pattern that scans reliably
    • Hosted landing pages on supported plans and QR types
    • Upgradeable to Smart Rules and A/B testing

Where dynamic QR codes pay off

Anywhere a QR code is printed once and lives for months — packaging, signage, menus, cards.

    Product packaging

Update ingredients, manuals, refill links or warranty pages without reprinting boxes.

    Posters & outdoor

Run one printed campaign, swap the landing page weekly, and monitor scan activity over time.

    Restaurant menus

Print the QR once on the table — change menu items, prices or specials from your phone.

    Business cards

One QR opens your contact card. Add new socials or change your role without reprinting.

    Retail promos

Same shelf-talker QR. New offer every week. Track which store drives the most scans.

    Events

Print flyers in advance, swap to the agenda, livestream or feedback form on the day.

Hosted landing pages are available on supported plans and QR types — perfect for menus, vCards, events, products, and link-in-bio style pages. Edit them any time, the QR stays the same.

Smart Rules, Product QR and A/B testing are Pro plan features. Choose a signup plan that includes Pro (trial or paid): during an active trial, live visitor scans already work until the trial ends; after that, keep redirects on with a subscription.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a dynamic QR code?+

A dynamic QR code points to a short redirect URL managed inside QRflows. The printed pattern stays the same forever, but you can change the final destination — link, PDF, hosted page or routing rule — at any time.

Can I really change the destination after the QR is printed?+

Yes. That is the core idea: you edit the destination in your QRflows dashboard and the next scan goes to the new URL. The QR code on packaging, posters, menus or business cards never has to be reprinted.

What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?+

Static QR codes encode the destination directly inside the pattern, so it cannot be changed once printed and there is no scan tracking. Dynamic QR codes encode a short QRflows URL, so the destination is editable and every scan is logged.

Do dynamic QR codes track scans?+

Yes. QRflows logs scan activity and shows counts and available breakdowns in your analytics dashboard — including device insights and country data where available.

Will a dynamic QR code expire?+

Dynamic QR codes remain active and editable while your QRflows plan is active. Limits and available features depend on your plan.

Are dynamic QR codes bigger or harder to scan than static ones?+

No. Because dynamic QR codes encode a short redirect URL, they actually contain less data than most static URLs — which means simpler patterns that scan reliably even at small sizes on packaging.

Can one dynamic QR send people to different pages depending on country or device?+

Yes — that's Smart Rules (Pro). One QR code can route by country, device, language, time of day or date, with a default destination if no rule matches.

Is a dynamic QR code free with QRflows?+

You can start a free trial and create dynamic QR codes right away. Plans differ in scan volume, advanced features (Smart Rules, Product QR, A/B testing) and team seats — see the pricing page.
